Slavoj Žižek brilliantly defines ideology

«A friend visited Niels Bohr in his house in the countryside and noticed an horseshoe above the entrance door. Everyone knows that in Europe we believe that it keeps the house safe from evil spirits.
The friend was shocked and told him: “Niels, you’re a scientist! Do you really believe in these kinds of superstitions?”.
Bohr replied: “No, of course not. I’m not crazy”.
“And why is it there, then?”, the friend asked.
“Because I was told that it works even if we don’t believe in it”».
